Western Monarch Conservation

I recently attended a webinar presented by Kimberley Young, Xerces Ambassador for Education and Conservation, Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. The topic was Western Monarch Conservation.

Although the focus was on the Western Monarch Butterfly crisis, much of the information is relevant for the Eastern Monarch Butterflies as well. Both populations are suffering, but the Western Monarch is in severe decline, since only 1,914 monarchs were counted on 246 sites in California for the annual Xerces Society Thanksgiving count.

The webinar is extremely informative, with a comprehensive explanation of why the monarch population is in crisis.

It also includes a call to action, where citizen scientists play a crucial role. We all must do our part to help the monarch butterflies and other pollinators.
