Firecracker Skimmer is here to stay

The Firecracker or Flame Skimmer female apparently has discovered a good afternoon resting spot on our patio.

For the past three days she arrived in the mid afternoon and perched on the arch of an old planter stand that we once discovered in the shrubbery of the backyard of our former residence.

As you can see the skimmer blends right in with the patina of the stand.

This California native perches on the stand for many hours.

She flies up in the air whenever an unsuspecting fly passes by, then lands back on the stand. She only leaves at sunset.

Apparently there are enough flies and ants here for her to feast on.

You can see why these are also called dragonflies.
