Pollinators and Flowers

So we started to create this garden one and a half years ago.

And the pollinators come.

Above is an umber skipper Poanes melane on a blossom of our Verbena lilacina ‘De La Mina’ shrub. This shrub is a California native, discovered on Cedros Island off the west coast of Baja California by horticulturist Carol Bornstein.

At last the California fuschia Epilobium 'Schieffelin's Choice' is blooming again.

It grows close to ground to about 8 inches high and is a hummingbird favorite.

Although it is drought tolerant, it blooms more with deep watering at least every two weeks.

Bees, such as the yellow-face bumblebee, are crazy about the blossoms on the nude buckwheat Eriogonum nudum. These blossoms provide a nice landing platform, and are full of nectar and pollen. The plant has tall, bare, leafless stems with lovely white and pink flower clusters.
