Surprise visitors at the bird bath today

We rarely see hooded orioles in our garden here, usually once a year.

Imagine my surprise when I happened to look through a window at the back yard and saw this bird.

I had never seen a female oriole, only the bright yellow males, so at first I had no idea what kind of bird this was.

She first landed on a trellis that supports our potted bougainvillea, and then she flew straight for the bird bath. She seemed to really enjoy the bath, splashing around in it.

Here she is, about to climb out of the bath.

Suddenly a male hooded oriole landed on the bird bath platform while the female was still bathing. This shot is a little blurry, but see what a vibrant shade of yellow the male's plumage is.

Then a smaller male oriole flew from the side of our house, and landed in a neighbor's tree.

It's possible that the oriole couple had a nest in one of the trees, and this is their child.

This sighting was definitely a matter of being at the right place at the right time.

What a treat it was to see these beautiful birds this afternoon.
