After heavy rains, the California hummingbird sage Salvia spathacea is producing its first blooms of the year.

This plant is native to southern and central California.

It spreads by rhizomes, but since our plant is growing in a large pot, it is contained, not sprawling.

It's been raining non-stop for several days now.

During the heavy showers the birds are hunkering down in the trees.

But when the rain is light, the birds venture out.

This afternoon I observed this Anna's hummingbird visit the Chiapas salvia shrub for nectar.

The Chiapas...

The local Anna's hummingbirds have a favorite perch where they absorb the warmth of the late afternoon sun, and from where at sunset they easily spot flying insects for an evening meal.

The perch is a blackberry vine that dried up last year, but is strong enough to supp...

Some of the plants in our garden I intentionally planted for our local hummingbirds as their nectar source.

Instead of a feeder, which we had kept full of nectar in the backyard of our former home, we decided it best here that the hummingbirds get their nectar from natu...

We've had quite a lot of unseasonable rain for the past two days, and when the showers are light the Anna's hummingbirds don't seem to mind at all.

Sitting on a branch, they sometimes flap and fluff their wings, bathing.

Hummingbirds and larger bees visit this plant all day.

We have this plant growing in a large pot, and it is doing well, especially when we have a lot of winter rain. It sp...

Observing birds in the garden, at sunset, is always a magical experience for me.

They glow in the light of the setting sun.

Here is an Anna's Hummingbird taking in those last rays of the day.

It's quite brisk outdoors these days, very typical for February in Northern California.

And when it is sunny there's a lot of bird activity.

Here is an Anna's hummingbird that flew high up above our neighbor's tree and landed on a twig right in the middle of the tree.

This isn't a black and white photo.

It was taken mid-morning from our patio.

The sky was gray again, and air quality very unhealthy.

The birds and insects still deal with it.

Here are two Anna's hummingbirds perched on branches of the neighbors' crab apple tree.

I make sure...

There is a section of the garden beds on the patio where the plants are specifically for our local hummingbirds.

The Abutilon "Red Tiger", or "Red Tiger" Flowering Maple is one of them.

I planted it last year in the spring as a seedling, and it is now over six feet tall,...
